Cut Resistant Sleeves - Buyer’s Guide
You need the best arm protection when wearing cut resistant sleeves. Therefore, we are going to talk about the things to consider.
ANSI Levels
The ANSI cut level is important here because it tells you what the sleeve protects against. For example, a level 2 sleeve can be suitable for automotive assembly and other low hazards.
A level 3 option is suitable for light glass handling and metal stamping. The level 4 version works well for sheet metal handling and metal stamping. With the fifth level, you can use it to process meat, handle slitter blades, and deal with paper and pulp.
Material
You want cut resistant sleeves that are made of multiple materials. That way, you get more protection. Generally, stainless steel is added to the mix. Therefore, it’s usually a cut level of 5 and provides the most protection.
However, glass can also be added, which offers thermal conductivity and a cooler feeling. Those made of glass might not be flame resistant, especially when Dyneema fabric is used.
Fit
Most of the brands we feature have a one-size-fits-all mentality. They’re designed to be formfitting, so they stretch. Of course, they’re supposed to be snug, but they shouldn’t cut off your circulation.
Generally, the goal is to ensure that the sleeve doesn’t slide down the arm toward the elbow. That’s not going to provide you with the most protection possible. Plus, if it bunches up around the elbow, this can get uncomfortable. You may also notice that the material there makes it harder to move the arm in all directions. Make sure that the sleeve features a non-sliding grip at the top.
Some sleeves are designed to stop at the wrist. These offer suitable protection and are designed to be worn along with cut-resistant gloves. However, you can find options that have a thumb hole and separate fingers. They offer a bit more protection, but you may find it harder to wear a glove with them.

Heat Resistance
Most gloves specifically mention heat resistance because you might be holding something hot for an extended period.
Generally, heat resistance means that it can withstand heat and keep it away from the arm for a few moments. You’re not likely to hold something hot with your arms for long periods. It’s a way to protect your arms in case you accidentally come in contact with something hot. Usually, this means that you feel pain in about four seconds and have more than 15 seconds to get second-degree burns. Therefore, you’ve got more time to protect your body.
Of course, Kevlar and nylon work well, but stainless steel reinforcements can provide both heat resistance and better protection against cuts.
Length
Search for a sleeve that is at least 17 or 18 inches long. This is going to protect the arm from the wrist to the elbow and about three or more inches above that. That is often adequate, as you are sure to wear a short-sleeved shirt, as well. Most people don’t need sleeves that go all the way up to the shoulder.
Therefore, the 18-inch version is about right. Of course, you’ve got to consider the rolling aspect, as you don’t want the sleeve to come down. Plus, you should never roll it down. This can cause it to get caught in a piece of machinery or put too much pressure on the nerves and cause damage.
Conclusion
Though all of the sleeves we featured in this review are excellent, we feel that the IdeaPro brand was one of the best. With the stainless steel inside the nylon, it’s stronger than other options. Plus, the sleeves can be used for a variety of situations and applications. Though it isn’t machine-washable, the protection you get is well worth the work of cleaning them periodically.
