Since their inception over ten years ago, the Second Shift line-up still remains one of Caterpillars most trusted and popular work boots. What could possibly make this work boot reign the markets for a decade? Glad you asked. It could be because the boots are extra durable, super comfortable and yet somehow still manage to remain below the dreaded $100 mark. The Caterpillar Men’s 2nd Shift Steel Toe Boot offers all these and more.
If you work in a harsh environment or unforgiving working conditions that would destroy even the hardiest pair of pricey work dogs in a matter of moments, then the pocket-friendly Caterpillar Men’s 2nd Shift 6″ Steel Toe Boot is the ideal choice for you. This here’s a review f this wonder boot and all the features that make it a crowd favorite for all types of occupations.
Protection
After giving the 2nd Shift 6″ Steel Toe Boot a thorough look over, you can tell that it’s built for battle. The protective features start all the way from the full grain leather uppers that are buffed to withstand all the abuse you can hurl at the boot to the high traction oil and slip resistant rubber outsoles to keep you firmly planted.
Underneath these gorgeous, sturdy leather uppers is an even hard steel toe cap that meets and exceeds ASTM safety standards. This means that construction workers and staff in hazardous environment can work without worrying about sudden impacts and compression forces crushing their toes. However, we had to deduct some points for leaving our boys in the electrical industry out on this one. This Steel Toe Boot does not include electrical hazard protection.
Solid Construction
Caterpillar knows that their boots will be tried and tested in the fiery, hard labor industries; the last thing they want is for anything to separate your foot from your boot. The Caterpillar 2nd Shift work boots are made using robust, single sewed Goodyear Welt construction that joins those hardy full-grain leather uppers to the resilient outsole.
To top it all off, the manufacturer secured the strong trim up highlight with solid snares and eyelets. Now, while the Goodyear construction means that resoling your boots will be a nightmare, it’ll be a while before the stitches come apart.
Comfort
As CAT often says; you take that comfort where you can get it. When it comes to giving your feet the best environment possible, the 2nd Shift 6″ Steel Toe Boot from CAT does not disappoint. Starting off this luxurious ride is the climate control capabilities of this heavy duty stepper.
The interiors are lined with Climasphere sock liners that regulate and control the temperatures. It achieves this by keeping your feet cool and dry in hot temperatures and all warm and toasty in the winter. The Climasphere sock liners are further complemented by a nylon liner that quickly wicks away any dampness and counteracts the ill effects of sweating.
As if your feet weren’t comfortable enough, Caterpillar went ahead and furnished the Second Shift work boot with generous cushioning on the neck as well as hefty padding around the lower leg. It’s hard to believe all these comfort features are packed into one single boot.
Shortcomings
While this affordable work boot excels in lots of other features, we can’t help but notice a few crucial shortcomings. In an effort to help you make an informed decision, it helps when you know what to expect:
First off, the steel toe cap may protect you from above, but don’t expect the same courtesy from below. The Men’s 2nd Shift 6″ Steel Toe Boot does not have a steel shank; so technically, they’re not puncture proof.
Secondly, while the footwear does not claim to be insulated, the insulation levels can best be described as moderate. In other words, wear these boots in moderate climate. If you can’t help working in excessively hot or cold areas, you’ll need something more expensive.
And lastly; the water resistance. Now, while the waterproofing is not really all that great, it can be easily fixed with the application of a decent proofing agent. After that, these Second Shift Boots will be waterproof all the way to the ankle length. Take things too far and water will seep in through the tongue.
Verdict
The Caterpillar Men’s 2nd Shift 6″ Steel Toe Boot seem to have an array of uses that would definitely be helpful for workers who require additional protection on the job. Since they are slip and oil resistant, auto repairmen, refinery workers, engineers or anyone working on smooth surfaces will be well suited.
Similarly, our boys over at the construction industry will love the steel toe, but they may want to search for something else if they deal with piercing hazards on a daily basis. And while they may look stylish enough to wear for everyday casual purposes, the 6-inch lace-up, ankle cut shaft is designed for adjustable support more standard in intensive labor.
Generally, these work boots are a great all rounder and are designed to give workers a little bit of everything at a very friendly price. If you’re in the market for a well-rounded safety toe work boot designed to survive but still don’t want to cough up a fortune, the Second Shift Boot will be damn hard to look past
