  • Affordability. Quality work boots are not cheap, so need to spend your money wisely.
  • Durability. In a rough and ready working environment, your boots need to last.

What to Look For in a Work Boot for Construction Workers

Before you set out spending your hard-earned cash on safety boots, you need to have a good idea of what is important and how to separate the good from the trash. It all starts with knowing what to look for.

Safety Toes

Probably the most important aspect of a work boot is the toe protection. This is a layer below the outer skin of the boot that protects your feet from injury. When heavy objects fall, the safety cap on the toe of the boot prevents your feet from being crushed. They also prevent injuries from other types of impact, like accidental knocks.

There are three types of ASTM approved materials used for safety toes:

  • Steel Toes offer the highest level of protection. If your greatest concern is protecting your feet from high-impact injury, this will be the best type of safety toe material. They are the most commonly used safety boots on a constructions site where the risk of foot injury is the greatest. The downside of steel toe work boots is that they are heavy. This can cause fatigue, especially if you do a lot of climbing up ladders.
  • Aluminum Toes are lighter than steel, making them a better option if you want to avoid the fatigue caused by a heavier boot. They offer a similar level of protection to steel, though may not hold up as well to very heavy impacts. Aluminum toe protection tends to be more expensive. If you regularly work on ladders or need to climb a lot, this could be your best option.
  • Composite Toes are made from a non-metallic composite material. In situations where arcing or similar hazards demand a non-conductive work boot, these are the best safety boots. They are relatively lightweight but don’t offer as much impact protection.

Waterproof Boots

Working outdoors means that you are inevitably going to be exposed to moisture. Rain and mud can permeate the boot, leaving you feeling dreadfully uncomfortable. This will hinder your ability to perform at your best and can lead to skin damage if your feet are regularly exposed to prolonged moisture.

There are two types of waterproof safety boots for construction:

  • Rubber boots offer exceptional waterproofing and are generally less expensive than other options. They are quite comfortable and ensure that no moisture harms your feet. In hot weather, rubber waterproof boots can become uncomfortable. Because rubber does not breathe, your feet will become sweaty and hot when the temperature rises.
  • Leather waterproof boots are made by using a waterproof coating on the leather used to make the boots. Depending on the grade of coating used, these boots can be 100% waterproof or water resistant. The latter is okay for working where spray or spillage may be a problem, but they are not the best for constant exposure to moisture. Good quality waterproof leather work boots can be quite expensive. The greatest advantage of using leather for a waterproof safety boot is that they are the most comfortable. Leather boots are cooler to wear in a hot working environment and may provide better flexibility, allowing for a more comfortable fit.

Slip Resistance

Injuries from slips and falls on a jobsite are fairly common. To protect yourself from these hazards look for work boots with slip-resistant outer soles.

Durability

If you’re going to depend on your work boots for a long time, a quality product is essential. Although it may be tempting to go for the cheapest product, you could easily be disappointed soon after. You should look at the material used like the thickness of the leather, quality rivets and fasteners, as well as stitching.

Generally, there are some brands that you can rely on to offer exceptional quality and the highest levels of safety.
