Snake Proof Gaiters
Snake proof boots are a great starting point when looking for protection against any dangerous creatures in the wilderness. However, they are not the only option available. There are many people that like to add snake proof gaiters for further peace of mind. These gaiters over great shin and calve protection for anyone working in snake infested areas. This includes surveyors, land clearance specialists, environmental workers, hunters and more. They should be large enough to go other the work boots and trousers, not just the calves, with protection from ankle to knee. Even so, some people do use them with shorts when doing yard work on hotter days.
The best products are those that offer great protection with tough materials and a good fit. The materials and shapes can vary from brand to brand. There are also variations in the fixtures and means of removing this gaiters. Some allow for a little more adaptation than others. It is important to check the measurements and specifications before buying. Also take the time to look for reports from those that have encountered snakes while using the product. Some of the more interesting snake proof options are as follows.
1. Crack Shot Snake Guardz
The first thing that stands out with this Crack Shot snake proof product is the interesting design. There are many brands that create a basic covering for the legs alone. This is often adequate when paired with a good pair of boots. Here the design continues over the feet for metatarsal protection. There are also buckles on the side for a good fit and they fold up for transportation. This is helpful when traveling between sites.
This all means great protection for those at risk of encountering dangerous snakes during their working day. There is the same thick padding around the shins and calves as other top brands. They are also sold as snake proof, not snake resistant. Despite all of this, they are still lightweight, at just 11 ounces. There are plenty of positive reports about the feel and effectiveness of these gaiters. There is also the added endorsement that these guards are used by the US Border Patrol and US Forestry Service. This is therefore seen as the more high-end option, with all those features and clients. Still, there are other choices if this seems a little heavy-duty.
2. Foreverlast Snake Guard Shields
The main selling point with this option has to be the great use of materials. Here there are different approaches for different needs. The main body is thick and sturdy to protect users against those snake bites. There is also enough water resistance in this material for use in swamps and rivers. On top of that, there is also a tough cordura-like upper for protections against brush briars. This model is therefore sold as a great choice for hunting and stalking in the brush. This purpose is also clear from the camo-style pattern on the material.
The only issue here is that there are some occasional problems with the fastenings. They fasten with buckles, but those buckles aren’t as strong as some people would have liked. This is a shame because the model otherwise offers great adjustability to ensure that these fit different leg sizes, and go over trousers and boots. The buckle design is sound, it just doesn’t always have the strength in the build as some would like. Still, there is that good fit, and the slip-on snake proof gaiters below don’t have this adaptability.
3. Tuff Shins - Plastic Snake Leggings
This option has a great name that sums up precisely what these guards are – tough legging-style shin guards with a basic plastic construction. The main difference with this model is that easy to put on and take off. There are no ties, velcro straps or tricky buckles to contend with – which also means less that can break. All users have to do is pull them on or off like leggings. The benefit here is ease of use and time saved. The downside is the lack of adjustability.
These guards are 19 inches high at the front and 15 at the back, with a circumference of around 21 inches. This means that those with larger legs and thick work trousers may struggle. The tight fit could leave areas exposed, so not quite so snake proof.
The plus side here is that there are also comfortable in different situations. This solid plastic construction is strong, but some say they are so lightweight they they barely notice them while wearing them. The design, weight and waterproofing means that they offer versatility in different situations. They can provide protection in the country while stalking through the bush, in swamps with hidden dangers, and against stingrays when fishing.
